TRENTON, N.J.(AP)

A New Jersey congressman has arrived in the Republic of Georgia in an effort to bring home two young girls stuck overseas since the conflict with Russia began.

The office of Rep. Christopher H. Smith says he landed in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi (tuh-BLEE'-see) on Tuesday.

Smith spokeswoman Mary McDermott Noonan says 7-year-old Ashley and 3-year-old Sophia Evans were discussed in meetings with Georgian officials.

The Evans girls were visiting their maternal grandparents when Russian troops invaded Georgia nearly two weeks ago. Russian checkpoints have blocked their paths to escape.

The State Department says about 30 U.S. citizens under 18 are in Georgia without their parents.
